Tomato- Italian Roma Heirloom (indeterminate)
Solanum lycopersicum
The origins of this heirloom paste and canning tomato can be traced back to Italy. 6 ounce tomatoes are abundant in Italian Roma tomatoes. Unique to this type of tomato, this heirloom is indeterminate. The firm, meaty flesh of this Italian heirloom tomato, will give a continuous harvest throughout the season. These 3-6oz tomatoes have a sweet taste and few seeds, making them ideal for sauce, canning, or slicing up for salads, pizza, and sandwiches. It takes about 80 days to reach full maturity. Romas do lean toward the heat tolerant side of the tomato spectrum. They can take night time temperatures as high as the mid to lower 70's, making this a great choice for a late winter planting for as spring/early summer harvest, or a late summer planting for an early fall harvest. Tomatoes were not discovered as a vegetable by Italians until the 18th century, but they soon became a popular ingredient in Italian sauces and pasta.
