Description
Sunflower Maximilian’
Helianthus maximiliani
This plant contains several tall, leafy and un-branched stems. Broad and narrow leaves can be up to 10 inches long at the bottom and as short as 2 inches at the end. They're alternate, coarse, and hairy, with slightly wavy margins, sometimes folded lengthwise, and a sharp tip. Numerous yellow flower heads emerge from leaf axils and rise on their own stalks. This sunflower is a desirable range plant that is consumed by many animals. It is native to prairies. It produces a large crop of seeds that make it valuable for wildlife. The naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, Germany, was given the name. These seeds need 1 to 4 weeks of cold stratification
