Spinach- Okame, Hybrid
Spinacea oleracia
Okame spinach is an early maturing Japanese hybrid that is a strong plant and grows rapidly. As far as a "regular" spinach, Okame tolerates warmer temperatures, is slow to bolt, and has a good resistance to downy mildew 1 and 2 and a high tolerance to 3. It's heat tolerance and the fact that it can be harvested multiple times throughout the season, makes Okame a great spinach to plant in sucession from early fall through to early spring. It produces long multi lobed, arrow-shaped leaves that are wide and dense, with a smooth surface, and has tender stems that are also edible. Okame spinach has a light peppery, earthy flavor and is a succulent green spinach.
