Tomato-Beefsteak, Heirloom
Solanum lycopersicum
Beefsteaks are cultivated for their taste and scale, which makes them ideal for slicing and summer sandwiches. Beefsteak tomatoes are a common tomato variety for home gardens because of their big, thickly fleshed fruits. This indeterminate tomato plant can get large and have fruits up to 1-pound. They need a heavy trellis. Since beefsteak tomatoes take time to mature, they should be begun early to avoid frost in the winter, and insect and fungus pressure in the late Spring. These tomatoes set fruit best when nighttime temperatures are above 50, and will not set fruit if the nighttime temperature are above 68F.
