Lettuce- Grand Rapids TBR (Heirloom)
Lactuca sativa
Grand Rapids TBR, a vibrant loose leaf lettuce with light green leaves and a slightly white center, grows rapidly from Fall through early Spring. It was developed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to handle the cool or warm, damp, and low light conditions that the lettuce would endure in the shipping process. Now, what the heck does that have to do with growing lettuce in Florida? Don't ask me why I tried this one out. I don't remember. Turns out, that in making this lettuce more robust for packing and distribution, they developed a lettuce that can handle our bi-polar winter weather. In addition, if you or a house member is on "team Iceberg", first off, my condolences. Grand Rapids with its light, crisp, clean taste, makes a great substitute.
