Cowpea- Pinkeye Purple Hull

Vigna unguiculata

Pinkeye Purple Hull are productive, 2 foot tall plants that don't need to be staked. They produce prolifically during summer conditions, but can almost be grown yearround,  from central Florida, south. Cowpeas, also called Crowder peas, are very nutritious, low in fat, high in fiber and high in protein. Serve with cooked greens, ham hocks, and rice for a traditional Southern dish, stew or soup. It takes 60 days for fresh cowpeas and 90 for dry peas. Great nitrogen fixers, pinkeye cowpeas can also be used as a cover crop, and turned under when finished. Cowpeas also attract and can withstand apids, making a perfect environment to invite those much desired lady bugs to your yard.
