Lettuce- Black Seeded Simpson Loose Leaf (Heirloom)
Lactuca sativa
An open pollenated, exquisitely tender and delicately flavored leaf lettuce that is well-suited for a variety of climates. The Simpson ruffled lettuce leaf is large and bright green in color. A popular choice for gardens for over 150 years, a little more on the heat tolerant side, this lettuce can be started indoors in late Summer, and planted out in early Fall. Your last planting of Black Seeded Simpson, can usually be left in until almost the end of Spring. I have found that the 9 to 15 inch tall plants can be a little bit quick to bolt, but we are still throwing it in the heat tolerant basket, due to the fact that it is slow to get bitter.
