Vaccinium fuscatum

  Black Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium fuscatum)

Grown and propagated directly from our land in Citrus County, this native Florida blueberry thrives in acidic, moist-to-wet soils and even performs well in containers. Sometimes called Hairy Highbush or Black Highbush Blueberry, Vaccinium fuscatum produces clusters of small, jet-black berries that ripen from red and are loved by birds, bees, and foragers alike.

While the fruit is smaller than commercial varieties, the flavor is outstanding- bold, sweet, and distinctly blueberry. Great for snacking straight off the bush or adding to wild jams, wine, or baked goods.

Height: 4–10 ft at maturity

Flowers: Bell-shaped, pale pink to white (spring)

Fruit: Small, ripens red to black (late spring to summer)

Foliage: Glossy green with brilliant red fall color- new growth can be hairy

Pollinators: Attracts native bees, especially bumblebees

Habitat: Wet woods, bogs, acidic soil; container-friendly

Edibility: Mildly sweet to tart—exceptional wild blueberry flavor

Wildlife Value: High—supports birds, bees, and native ecosystems

This isn’t a supermarket blueberry—it’s a piece of wild Florida. Perfect for native gardens, edible landscaping, permaculture, or ecological restoration.

These plants need lots of regular water while getting established. Solitary plants rarely fruit. So make sure to plan more than one.

Just like everything else we sell, these plants are all organically grown, in-house. We do not use any synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and blend our own potting soil from scratch based on each plant species' needs. Unlike other nurseries, we do not focus on the size of the plant, but rather the condition of the roots. We grow everything with your long-term success in mind, rather than what it will look like "on the shelf"
