Silphium astericus
This pretty wildflower is a Florida native of the flatwoods and sandhills. Displaying bright yellow flowers up to 2 ½ inches in diameter and the plant itself can reach 2-5 feet tall. In the Asteraceae family, the same family as daisies, this flower dies back in the winter, but will persist in a warmer climate. A prolific seed producer, it reseeds after the seed heads drop, and will also spread through rhizomes. With edible stems, Native Americans chewed on them to clean their teeth. The plants prefer dry to moist well-draining soil and will make a perfect colorful addition to any garden.
